I'm looking to do a 1987 944 conversion with an LS1. I want to make it into a track/day car. I want to get it operating well to start, with the possibilities of upgrading it later on (turbo, suspension, etc.) I am not using a conversion kit since it costs far to much for what its worth. What do I need to do? What have you done? What do you recommend? Also, how helpful is the 944 V8 conversion book?

Unless you have the skills of a Jack Roush, with a pretty advanced shop, I think you'll find in the long run you'll spend more winging it without a kit, especially as you consider that your time is worth money too. Assuming from your post that cost is a major consideration, I would suggest scouring the internet to find someone who is in need of money (new daddy, etc, lol) and selling an LS-1 kit secondhand, LS-1 kit components, or find an LS-1 kit conversion that is partially completed. If you shop carefully, you can find bargains if you look and don't get in a hurry. Would that there were a kit for the conversion I'M in the process of (VR6/944)...
