Well, my transaxle is finished and I have been cleaning and painting parts. I bought a powder coat gun from Harbor Freight so I am now powder coating parts. I have the front struts done and the reat trailing arms and associated pieces. I have beed blasted the aluminum suspension parts and finished my Jag front calipers. I pulled the gas tank to clean it and while I was under there I checked the fuel lines and found a spot rusted pretty bad. So I decided to di the whole underside of the body too.

I haven't decided if I will remove all of the factory PVC undercoat and paint it or just fix the undercoat where needed.

Nice! I'm jealous of the body rotisserie and the garage space.:) What diff did you end up with? Did you replace the tranaxle bearings? That is on my list when I put in my diff.

What I have for a transaxle is G31. It came, in the US, only in the 1980 924 turbo. For the rest of the world it began in 1979 and in some places went through 1984. It was used in all of the factory race cars (924 Carrera GT, GTS, GTR, GTP. I believe this to be the strongest transaxle available for our cars. They can be expensive though. I have an article posted on the old board (PHB) about 924/944 transaxles.

Mine is currently fresh. (just finished it) It has ZF LSD and now has a European ring and pinion which is better for the v8 along with the European 5th gear ratio. I've replaced the first gear dog teeth and all of the synchros. This transaxle has less than 40,000 miles so the bearings didn't need replacement. I also have first gear set up with the 924 Carrera GT synchro.

I bought a used G31 from a guy in the UK to get the ring and pinion and, of course, needed to reset the gears in my transaxle. This is a difficult and very time consuming job to do correctly without the Porsche ring and pinion tool.

I built the rotisserie for another project about 15 yrs ago. I used 2 engine stands as a base. It makes doing any repaire to the underside so much easier.

I thought my garage was small. It is 22' x 22" --- barely a 2 car. My last one was 26"x 26" so it seems small to me. Some day I hope to have something much bigger like a 4 car or a small pole barn.

Got to admit those g31's are an odd shape. But if they do the job thats great. Boy wish I had a rotisserie, would have been a lot easier when I was running fuel and brake lines. Oh and I really believe the bigger the garage the more you put in it. "No I can't throw this out, I might need it some day and not be able to find one" I still have 2 boat trannies from a boat I no longer have, next to the generator I have never used next to ... You get the idea!

Looks like you are knee deep into this now!

How is the powder coating going? Hope your not baking your stuff in the wifes oven. I take it the calipers were a powder job.

Where did you find the porsche decals?

Good luck!!! -Ryan :D

Where did you find the porsche decals?

You can get these from Greg Sloan (gt1scca). I bought a set of 10 off ebay for 10 bucks.

Yea, the decals are from e-bay.

The powder coating is commimg along. Like anything else there is a learning curve.

I picked up an electric oven someone was throwing out. I cleaned it and removed the burners on top, added a convection fan and a programmable PID temp controller. It works very well. I originally got it to use for vacuum forming but it works good for powder coating too.

The rotisserie I made about 15 yrs ago out of two engine stands and some scrap steel tubing. It was pretty easy to do. I made everything so it comes appart for easier storage. It makes it very easy to do the underside of the car. Innitially I wasn't going to do the underbody but after i took the suspension off and the gas tank out I was thinking that the underside would be the only thing I didn't do on the car and after it is finished i would probably be kicking myself for not doing it. The floor had a few dents and the rockers have been banged up quite a bit so this is making it easy to repair.

I found a powder coating forum and they say there that once you get started you end up powder coating everything. I guess it is another thing that can get out of hand.

Update

I have the underside completely stripped of the factory PVC undercoating. (guessing about 40# worth) I have straightened the floor and needed to remove the front floor members to straighten them. I will be re-coating the floor with rubberized undercoating but this onlt weighs less than 8#. I have cleaned the fuel and brake lines and painted them with POR15.

I found my gas tank had a crack on top so I fixed that and repainted the tank with POR15 as well.

My rear trailing arms, front strut housings and calipers are powder coated. I need to powder coat the a-arms and front spindles. I bead blasted the rear backing plates and dust shields so they look new now. All of the shift linkage for my G31 is rebuilt.

I will be bonding the rear Carrera Gt flares shortly and then will make up panels to close off the inner wheel wells.

Hopefuly I will have the car off of the rottiserie by the end of October. I want to get the body in primer before it freezes.

Great work! That's going to be a real beauty when it's done, inside and out!

Here are some pictures of the underside re-coated and the gas tank installed. Also one of the engine compartment.

Looking good! The Carrera GTS is one of my all time favorite Porsches. I can't wait to see your car when It's done. I should probably get off my ass and head to the garage myself!
